Asset Disposal

Strategy

Disposal is not simply the physical removal of equipment; it has accounting, regulatory, and data management dimensions. Asset Registry

Asset Utilization

Utilization is distinct from Availability — an asset can be available (ready to operate) but not utilized (not needed or not running). A highly reliable asset with very low utilization may not justify significant reliability investment; a heavily utilized asset with poor reliability has an outsized impact on operations. Asset Write-Off

An Asset Write-Off is the formal accounting and system process of removing a retired or disposed asset's remaining book value from the balance sheet and closing its record in the asset management system. Write-offs are the financial bookend to the asset lifecycle — they recognize that the asset no longer has value or is no longer in service. In Maximo, completing a write-off properly means retiring the asset record, closing open work orders, removing the asset from active PM schedules, and preserving its history in archived form. Availability

An asset can be highly reliable (rarely fails unexpectedly) but have low availability if it is frequently taken offline for scheduled PMs. Treating Availability and Reliability as the same number in KPI reporting leads to poor decisions about maintenance strategy and capital investment.
